In this weekend’s Gospel we will hear the following: “In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. “And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory,” These readings can be a source of fear or even confusion. Some of our Christian brothers and sisters preach about the second coming, the rapture, and the end is near. You may have heard about the alignment of the stars pointing to the book of revelation. Some of our Christian brethren said on September 23rd,2017the stars will align perfectly and this may be the day of the rapture. We are still here, but maybe we have been left behind, or they got it wrong. How do we as Catholics approach these readings? When someone says the world will end on this day, how do we as Catholics respond? The easiest way to respond is from scripture itself. Jesus tells us“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” We do not know the day our Lord will call us from this life, nor the day he will come again in Glory. We too can be ready on a daily basis if our Lord comes, our Lord may call us today or years from now, we are asked to stay awake and keep ourselves ready for the day he arrives. Over the next two weeks at daily mass, we will hear from Revelation. If you have read any portions of this book you know, it is a difficult read and is confusing. Our Christian brothers, use this to try and predict the second coming and the events during this time. Some have even dramatized the end times, using Revelation as their guide. We do not have to be afraid, and there are useful resources help us understand this book of scripture. If you have used our formed subscription at the parish, you can access one of these resources to help you understand this book. Search, Unlocking the Book of Revelation and listen to a talk by Dr. Michael Barber. He also wrote a book entitled Coming Soon, where he breaks open this book of scripture. We must always remember this; we do not know the hour nor the day, therefore stay awake and keep yourself ready every day, so if God comes today we can enter into his glory.
