Today we hear that all too well-known verse of take up your cross and follow me. I’m reminded of a great scene from Mel Gibson’s passion of the Christ where Jesus embraces the cross as he first receives it. He is seen as foolish by one of the thieves who will be crucified with them. Today’s statement by Jesus is striking and unexpected, but he calls us to a radical way of life to follow him in our own lives. But what I always remember is that even if our crosses are heavy, the Lord will help us out as much as he can.
