The Widow’s Mite
This weekend we hear about a poor widow who came and put two small coins into the treasury and how her small contribution was worth more than the wealthy who put a large sum in the same treasury. The coin she put it was recognized as the lowest value currency in circulation at the time. It is difficult to know what the exact value of that coin would represent today, but it was believed to be about 1/64th the value of a denarius, which was a single days wage during the time of Jesus. Currently, the federal minimum wage is 7.25 an hour which would turn out to be about 58 dollars a day. So imagine someone who has one or two dollars giving to the collection, not because that is what they had in their wallet, instead that is everything she had, and she gave it away. That is just enough to get a coke from the vending machine, may not be enough to get one item on the dollar menu at Mcdonalds. She was poor, but she still gave away everything.
