Our first reading today comes from the book of Ezekiel. Read the passage below.
The angel brought me, Ezekiel,
First Reading
back to the entrance of the temple of the LORD,
and I saw water flowing out
from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east,
for the façade of the temple was toward the east;
the water flowed down from the right side of the temple,
south of the altar.
He led me outside by the north gate,
and around to the outer gate facing the east,
where I saw water trickling from the right side.
Then when he had walked off to the east
with a measuring cord in his hand,
he measured off a thousand cubits
and had me wade through the water,
which was ankle-deep.
He measured off another thousand
and once more had me wade through the water,
which was now knee-deep.
Again he measured off a thousand and had me wade;
the water was up to my waist.
Once more he measured off a thousand,
but there was now a river through which I could not wade;
for the water had risen so high it had become a river
that could not be crossed except by swimming.
He asked me, “Have you seen this, son of man?”
Then he brought me to the bank of the river, where he had me sit.
Along the bank of the river I saw very many trees on both sides.
He said to me,
“This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah,
and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh.
Wherever the river flows,
every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live,
and there shall be abundant fish,
for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow;
their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail.
Every month they shall bear fresh fruit,
for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary.
Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
In the passage, we see water flowing down from the south side of the altar. Imagine yourself in your home church facing the altar like you usually do. The water would be flowing from the right side of the altar. Why is the side it is flowing from significant? As best I know, it was a symbolism of the temple in Jerusalem. When Passover occurred, they would purify the altar of sacrifice with water, and it would flow down the south side of the temple. There would be a river of blood and water flowing down into the Kidron Valley, which is south and east of the temple.
Ezekiel is promising that a river of life will flow from the temple. If you go to Jerusalem now, you will find that temple is not present, and what is there now is called the Dome of the Rock. However, this prophecy was fulfilled and continues to be fulfilled to this day. I recommend you open up to the passion narrative of our Lord. Take a look at John 19:33-35.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows* that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may [come to] believe
John 19:33-35
From Jesus’ side comes blood and water. John makes it a point to emphasize that someone was there to testify to this truth, that you may believe. Why would that matter? I think it is because John knows of the prophecy of Ezekiel and that from the side of Christ comes living water. The book of Revelation also backs up this point.
Revelation 22:1-2
Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of its street. On either side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations.
From Jesus’ side comes living water, the same living water promised by Ezekiel. How is this fulfilled in our time? At the sacrifice of the Mass, when water is poured into the chalice.
This might be a lot to take in and reflect over. What I would suggest is that Jesus wants to give us living water, and we find this living water in the sacraments. First, in our baptism, we received living water, which purified us and made us clean. Secondly, we receive God’s own body and blood in the Eucharist.
A question may come up for us during this time of the pandemic. How can I receive this living water when I’m ordered to stay at my house, and I can’t go to Mass? I believe we can do it through prayer and to read the scriptures. I’ve also seen many priests offer their private Mass on Facebook. I understand the bishop offers daily Mass at 8 am every morning from the Catholic Life Center. You should be able to find this on Catholic Life TV or channel 15. I know many churches have their doors open for specific hours of prayer before Jesus in the Eucharist in the tabernacle. Just remember to practice social distancing. I hope God can bless us all during this time even though we may be distanced from the sacraments.

3 Narcissists in the Bible: How God Took Them Out

God doesn’t always kill His enemies individually in the Old Testament, but when He does, they tend to be narcissists. What Onan, Jezebel, and Nabal each have in common with narcissists is an utter lack of empathy for others, overweening greed, and the suspicion that the world is out to cheat them of what should be theirs. Like the personality disorder that each display, they are self-absorbed and dedicated to taking what they want no matter the cost to others.
I have always been a little fascinated by the fact that God occasionally called out a few people and pulled them into permanent time-out. When I started looking at them, I began to realize that they all had some things in common, mainly that of being narcissists. Believing God to be patient, it is a scary thought that He would come to the end of His rope and decide it’s time for some justice. So let’s take a look.
Onan: Every Man for Himself (self-absorbed narcissists):
Onan is, of course, is known for his sexual issues to the extent that his name has been turned into a word for masturbation (onanism). But this is a misnomer. He didn’t actually do that (well, at least not in the story). Instead, he committed coitus interruptus. This is not the real issue. After all, no other mention is made prohibiting withdrawing during sex. The issue before God was a bit more complicated. Some things to consider are that God took out Er, Onan’s brother for his evil and Onan was commanded to marry Tamar and give her a son. If he doesn’t, then Er’s property goes to him. In marrying Tamar, he feels cheatednarcissist because his first son will bear his brother’s name, not his. His brother’s property, which would otherwise go to him, will go to his son, who will not legally be his son. Talk about a narcissistic outlook!
The other issue here is the treatment of Tamar. Children back then were your only 401k program. Widows without children had nowhere to go, no one to provide. This was an agrarian society. There weren’t any jobs available. You worked your land. Primogeniture meant that property went generally from male to male. Foreign concepts now (although recently foreign if you get my drift), women relied on men for provision as a general rule. Onan’s refusal to care for Tamar was stealing her inheritance and financial support. Additionally, Judah was king. Onan was diverting the kingly lineage from Er to himself.
If you doubt Onan’s criminal intent, think of the scene itself. He has sex with Tamar and then while she watches, “spills his seed onto the ground”.
He used her sexually, and in a way that was meant to both humiliate her and let her know his intention was to take what was due her.
Narcissists, indeed.
Jezebel: A Humiliating Fate (for Narcissists)
Jezebel, too, has no qualms about using the law to take what she wanted. I am not sure if she was a narcissist or a sociopath. After all, she committed murder with ease, and over issues of greed, killing one man for his vineyard to spare herself the cost. She is a user of people around her and her obsession with Elijah stems from his repudiation of her worship of Baal. His only crime, if you could call it that, was to call her out on her issues. But in the eyes of a narcissist, public humiliation or even just embarrassment, is a major trespass. She is murdered, according to Elijah’s word from God, and as the prophet indicates, is eaten by dogs.
I heard a missionary tell a story that always makes me laugh. She ministered to a cannibalistic tribe, though whether in South America or Papua New Guinea I can no longer remember. She lived there for several years, learning their language and translating it into a written language, all the while translating the Bible into the native tongue. The elders met with her almost every night as she translated. They did not respond much until the story of Jezebel. When they heard that the dogs did not eat the soles of Jezebel’s feet, all of a sudden everything became clear to them. They told her they decided that the Bible told the truth. Confused, she asked them why. Because they explained, they didn’t eat the soles either. The soles are too bitter. Who knew?
Only God could use such detail to bring about the redemption of a whole tribe of people.
Jezebel’s death was an intentional humiliation and apparently, arranged by a God no longer willing to hand out second chances.
Nabal: What’s Mine is Mine
I sometimes fantasize about writing a book and calling it “Life with Nabal” about my time with my ex-husband. Nabal, the husband of Abigail, refused to offer hospitality to David and his men. A narcissist at heart, he cannot see past his own self-importance, even when his life is on the line. Abigail, recognizing this as the insult it was due to the protection from enemies that David and his men provided, runs interference and feed them well. She is caught in a classic narcissist abuse dilemma. If she narcissistsobeys her husband, they will be killed. If she disobeys her husband, she may well be killed anyway. Nabal, a coward as well as a narcissist, keels over from the fear of what could have happened and the “Lord smote him until he died.” He died because he resented any intrusion into his wealth and pleasure, failing to understand that he only had them because of the protection of others.
These three narcissists were self-absorbed and did not suffer from any pangs of the conscience. Instead, they hated anyone who stood in their way. Their pride made them incapable of empathy, and their greed blinded them to the rights of others.
In the mind of narcissists, no one else really exists except as an extension of themselves.
This is why people often describe being in a relationship with a narcissist as being a slave.
A friend of mine left her husband for these reasons, found herself bewildered by his reaction. A clear-cut narcissist, he wanted her back very badly though he did not seem in the least heartbroken. Instead, when she asked him why he wanted her back, her husband said he felt as though he had lost his arm. Interesting. He felt like he lost a part of himself that did things for him. That was all she was to him, a body part and extension of himself.
I believe that God is a merciful God, even in the Old Testament. When people ask me about the issues of genocide in the Bible, I ask them to research the people groups that God wanted to be erased and compare them to the Nazis. Just as the Nazis committed genocide, so did many of these peoples.
But beyond those philosophical arguments, what frightens me is the notion that some are too far gone for redemption. That narcissists figure prominently in those numbers is enlightening and a warning. That God would simply remove a player from the stage is an indication that eventually, for each person, there comes a time when decisions end. I cannot imagine a Heaven with a Jezebel or an Onan or a Hitler in it. The question remains, however, can I imagine myself there? All I can say is praise the Lord for His grace.
But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. Hebrews 10:39

SLUŽBA ČITANJA
Devet mjeseci prije Božića Crkva slavi veliko otajstvo utjelovljenja Božje Riječi, upravljajući pogled na čin ljubavi Sina Božjega koji je htio postati čovjekom i na izvanrednu vjeru Djevice Marije, »majke Boga i Gospodina našega Isusa Krista« (Rimski kanon).
POZIVNIK
R. Otvori, Gospodine, usne moje.
O. I usta će moja navješćivati hvalu tvoju.
PSALAM 95 (94). Poziv na Božju hvalu
Bodrite jedni druge dan za danom dok još odjekuje ono ‘danas’ (Heb 3, 13).
(Umjesto Ps 95 (94) može se uzeti i Psalam 100 (99) ili Psalam 67 (66) ili Psalam 24 (23))
Antifona
Riječ je tijelom postala:
dođite, poklonimo se (aleluja).
Dođite, kličimo Gospodinu, *
uzvikujmo Hridi, Spasitelju svome!
Pred lice mu stupimo s hvalama, *
kličimo mu u pjesmama! (Ant.).
Jer Gospodin je Bog velik, *
Kralj velik nad svim bogovima.
U njegovoj su ruci zemaljske dubine, *
njegovi su vrhunci planina.
Njegovo je more, on ga je stvorio, *
i kopno koje načiniše ruke njegove: (Ant.).
Dođite, prignimo koljena i padnimo nice, *
poklonimo se Gospodinu koji nas stvori!
Jer on je Bog naš, *
a mi narod paše njegove, ovce što on ih čuva (Ant.).
O da danas glas mu poslušate: †
»Ne budite srca tvrda kao u Meribi, *
kao u dan Mase u pustinji
gdje me iskušavahu očevi vaši, *
iskušavahu, premda vidješe djela moja. (Ant.).
Četrdeset mi ljeta dodijavao naraštaj onaj, †
pa rekoh: Narod su nestalna srca, *
i ne proniču moje putove.
Tako se zakleh u svom gnjevu: *
Nikad neće ući u moj počinak!« (Ant.).
Slava Ocu i Sinu *
i Duhu Svetomu.
Kako bijaše na početku, †
tako i sada i vazda *
i u vijeke vjekova. (Ant.).
HIMAN
Um ljudima se mračio,
Svog Boga nisu spoznali:
Stvorenja razna isprazna,
Božanstvima su držali.
U ropstvo pravo đavolje
Mi bezumno smo upali,
Kao neljudi smo živjeli,
Svim strastima nagriženi.
On jedini se smilova –
Sin Boga Oca višnjega:
Sam čovjekom je postao,
Bog s nama sav se srodio.
U našem tijelu zaživje,
Iz groba slavan ustade,
Zloj smrti skrši okove –
I sve nas Ocu povrati.
Gle, slavimo dan stvaranja,
Bog Tvorac stvara čovjeka:
Duh svoj u glib udahnjuje,
Tek riječ – i tijelo živo je.
A kakve li tek radosti
Sad krije krilo Djevice:
Iz krila toga izniknu
Početak svijeta boljega.
Sva slava tebi, Isuse,
Kog rodi Djeva Marija.
I Ocu s Duhom preblagim
U vječne vijeke vjekova. Amen.
1^ Antifona
PSALAM 2.
Zašto se bune narodi, *
zašto puci ludosti snuju?
Ustaju kraljevi zemaljski, †
knezovi se rote protiv Gospodina *
i Pomazanika njegova:
“Skršimo okove njihove *
i jaram njihov zbacimo!”
Smije se onaj što na nebu stoluje, *
Gospod im se podruguje.
Tad im veli u svom gnjevu, *
žestinom ih on zbunjuje:
“Ta ja kralja svog postavih *
nad Sionom, svojom svetom gorom.”
Obznanjujem odluku Gospodnju: †
Gospodin mi reče: *
“Ti si sin moj, danas te rodih.
Zatraži samo, i dat ću ti puke u baštinu, *
i u posjed krajeve zemaljske.
Blago svima *
koji se njemu utječu!
Slava Ocu i Sinu *
i Duhu Svetomu.
Kako bijaše na početku, †
tako i sada i vazda *
i u vijeke vjekova. Amen.

2^ Antifona
Ulazeći u svijet kaže:
Tijelo si mi pripravio.
Evo dolazim, Bože, vršiti volju tvoju (aleluja).
PSALAM 19 (18 A).
Nebesa slavu Božju kazuju, *
naviješta svod nebeski djelo ruku njegovih.
Dan danu to objavljuje, *
a noć noći glas predaje.
Nije to riječ, a ni govor nije, *
nije ni glas što se može čuti,
ali po svoj zemlji razliježe se jeka, *
riječi njihove sve do nakraj svijeta sežu.
Ondje suncu razape šator, †
te ono kao ženik iz ložnice ide, *
kao div kliče kad prelijeće stazu.
Izlazi ono od nebeskog kraja, †
i put mu se opet s krajem spaja, *
ne skriva se ništa žaru njegovu.
Slava Ocu i Sinu *
i Duhu Svetomu.
i u vijeke vjekova. Amen.

PSALAM 45 (44)
Iz srca mi naviru riječi divne: †
pjesmu svoju ja kralju pjevam. *
Jezik mi je ko pisaljka hitra pisara.
Lijep si, najljepši od ljudskih sinova, †
po usnama ti se milina prosula, *
stoga te Bog blagoslovio dovijeka.
Pripaši mač uz bedra, junače, *
ogrni se sjajem i veličanstvom!
Zajaši i kreni za istinu, za blagost i pravdu, *
desnica ti tvoja gađa čudesno!
Strelice tvoje prodiru †
u srce kraljevih dušmana, *
narodi padaju pred tobom.
Prijestolje je tvoje, Bože, u vijeke vjekova, *
i pravedno žezlo — žezlo je tvoga kraljevstva!
Ti ljubiš pravednost, a mrziš bezakonje, †
stoga Gospodin, Bog tvoj, tebe pomaza *
uljem radosti kao nikog od tvojih drugova.
Smirnom, alojem i kasijom mirišu ti haljine, *
iz dvorova bjelokosnih harfe te vesele.
Kraljevske ti kćeri idu u susret, *
zdesna ti je kraljica u zlatu ofirskom.
»Slušaj, kćeri, pogledaj, prisluhni: *
zaboravi svoj narod i dom oca svog!
Zaželi li kralj ljepotu tvoju, †
smjerno se pokloni njemu, *
jer je on gospodar tvoj.
Narod tirski dolazi s darovima *
Naklonost tvoju traže prvaci naroda,
Sva lijepa korača kći kraljeva *
u haljinama zlatom vezenim
s veseljem ih vode i s klicanjem, *
u kraljeve dvore ulaze.
Umjesto otaca imati ćeš sinove, *
postavit ćeš ih knezovima na svoj zemlji
Iz koljena u koljeno naviještati će ime tvoje, *
hvalit će te narodi u vijeke vjekova.
Slava Ocu i Sinu *
i Duhu Svetomu.
i u vijeke vjekova. Amen.

On će mi sagraditi dom, a ja ću utvrditi njegovo prijestolje zauvijek. Utvrdit ću ga u svojem domu i u svom kraljevstvu zauvijek, i prijestolje će mu čvrsto stajati zasvagda.«
Natan prenese Davidu sve te riječi i cijelo viđenje.
Otpjev (Usp. Lk 1, 20-32)
O. Zdravo, Marijo, milosti puna. Gospodin s tobom. * Evo.(aleluja).
DRUGO ČITANJE:
Iz Pisama svetoga Leona Velikog, pape
(Pismo 28. Flavijanu, 3-4: Pl. 54, 763-767)
Začet ćeš i roditi Boga i čovjeka ujedno. * I blaženom ćeš se zvati među svim ženama.(aleluja).
O. Rodit ćeš Sina i ostat ćeš djevicom; postat ćeš trudna i bit ćeš vazda netaknuta majka. * I blaženom.(aleluja).

Nek bude milosrđe Tvoje, Gospodine, nad nama *
kako se ufamo u Tebe!
U Tebe se, Gospodine ufam: *
o da ne budem postiđen dovijeka!
Molitva
Bože, ti si htio da tvoja Riječ uzme ljudsku narav u krilu Djevice Marije. Udijeli nam da svoga Otkupitelja priznajemo Bogom i čovjekom te budemo dionici njegove božanske naravi. Po Gospodinu.
O. Amen.
Blagoslivljajmo Gospodina.
O. Bogu hvala.
